On Tuesday, January 19, 2016, Ms. Rannveig Skofteland, Deputy Head of Mission of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bratislava, and Ms. Soňa Sulíková, Senior Advisor on EEA and Norway grants, visited Bardejov on their journey around Eastern Slovakia. They have personally seen the positive progress that has occurred with the Old Synagogue restoration project in the past few months. The monumental entrance, staircase to women’s gallery and facade walls were reconstructed. At present, the restoration works proceed mainly in the interior of the suburbia – the beautiful Old Synagogue. The works are carried out by leading Slovak experts on restoration of old paintings. After finishing the renovation, each part of the synagogue will tell its own story. The representatives of Vita in Suburbia explained their planes for further utilization of the premises of the synagogue that will mainly serve for cultural and social purposes. Their vision is to increase potential of cultural tourism in connection of revitalization of the Bardejov’s world cultural heritage area where the Holocaust memorial, Jewish suburbia and nearby old heating plant would be incorporated.
